What size ceiling fan do I need for my room?
Start with floor area. Rooms up to 75 sq ft typically use 29–36-inch fans, 76–144 sq ft use 36–42 inches, 145–225 sq ft use 44–54 inches, and larger rooms often need 52–60 inches or multiple fans.

Match the room—not guesswork—to a practical blade-span range. The tool also flags long rooms, suggests multiple fans, and estimates a mount for the ceiling height.

Blade span is only one part of performance. Compare the manufacturer's airflow (CFM), efficiency, mounting clearances, and installation instructions before buying.
| Room area | Blade span | Example spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 75 ft² | 29–36 in | Small office, laundry, breakfast nook |
| 76–144 ft² | 36–42 in | Small bedroom, kitchen |
| 145–225 ft² | 44–54 in | Average bedroom or dining room |
| 226–400 ft² | 52–60 in | Large bedroom or family room |
| Over 400 ft² | 60–72 in or 2 fans | Great room, long covered patio |
Span is the full diameter swept by the blade tips. It sizes the fan to the floor area but does not measure airflow by itself.
Compare airflow in cubic feet per minute and efficiency between models in the recommended span. Motor and blade design matter.
Use a fan-rated electrical box, follow fixture clearances, and have fixed wiring handled according to local rules and the manufacturer's instructions.

Yes. An oversized fan can crowd walls, cabinets, lights, or doors and may feel visually heavy. Check the manufacturer's wall and fixture clearances as well as the blade-span recommendation.
Blades should generally be at least 7 feet above the floor, with roughly 8–9 feet often preferred for airflow and comfort. Use a flush mount on lower ceilings and a downrod on higher ceilings.
Two fans often distribute air better in rooms over about 400 sq ft or in long, narrow spaces with an aspect ratio above roughly 2:1. Size each fan for the area of its own zone.
