Mulch formula

Mulch volume is based on the area you want to cover and the depth of the mulch layer.

Volume = Area x Depth

The calculator converts depth to feet first, then returns cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters. It also lets you add extra material for settling, curves, and uneven edges.

Common mulch depths

1 inch: light refresh over an existing mulch layer.
2 inches: typical decorative bed coverage when the base is already prepared.
3 inches: common depth for weed control and moisture retention.
4 inches: heavier coverage for new beds or uneven areas.

Buying tips

Add 5% to 10% extra if the bed has curves, slopes, tree roots, or uneven edges.
Compare bagged and bulk prices using the same final cubic-foot or cubic-yard volume.
Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to reduce moisture problems.
Confirm bag size before buying. Common bags hold 1.5, 2, or 3 cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate how much mulch you need?

Measure the area in square feet, choose the mulch depth in inches, then multiply area by depth in feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to convert to cubic yards. This calculator also adds optional extra material for settling and uneven bed edges.

How deep should mulch be?

A light refresh is often about 1 inch. Most landscape beds use about 2 to 3 inches. New beds or weed-suppression projects may use closer to 3 to 4 inches, while mulch should usually be kept away from direct contact with plant stems and tree trunks.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. If one bag contains 2 cubic feet, then one cubic yard is 13.5 bags, so you would normally buy 14 bags. If one bag contains 3 cubic feet, one cubic yard is 9 bags.

Should I buy bagged mulch or bulk mulch?

Bagged mulch is convenient for smaller jobs and easier to transport. Bulk mulch is often better for larger areas because suppliers price it by the cubic yard. This calculator shows both bag count and bulk cubic yards so you can compare.
