How To Calculate Slope
Slope describes how steep a line is. It is the ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal change (run) between two points on a line.
Slope Formula
m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)
Example: Points (2, 3) and (5, 9) give m = (9-3)/(5-2) = 6/3 = 2.
Rise Over Run
"Rise" is the change in y, and "run" is the change in x. A slope of 2 means the line goes up 2 units for every 1 unit to the right.
Types of Slope
Positive
Line rises from left to right. Example: m = 3
Negative
Line falls from left to right. Example: m = -2
Zero
Horizontal line. m = 0, equation: y = b
Undefined
Vertical line. x2 = x1, equation: x = a
Frequently Asked Questions
What is slope?
Slope measures how steep a line is. It is defined as the ratio of vertical change (rise) to horizontal change (run) between any two points on a line. A positive slope goes upward left-to-right, a negative slope goes downward, zero slope is horizontal, and undefined slope is vertical.
How do you find slope from two points?
Use the slope formula: m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1). Subtract the y-coordinates to get the rise and the x-coordinates to get the run. Then divide rise by run. Example: for points (1, 2) and (4, 8), slope = (8 - 2) / (4 - 1) = 6/3 = 2.
What is slope-intercept form?
Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept (the point where the line crosses the y-axis). It is the most common way to express a linear equation because you can instantly read off both the slope and where the line crosses the y-axis.
What is point-slope form?
Point-slope form is y - y1 = m(x - x1), where m is the slope and (x1, y1) is a known point on the line. It is useful when you know the slope and one point but not the y-intercept. You can convert it to slope-intercept form by distributing and solving for y.
Can slope be negative or zero?
Yes. A negative slope means the line falls from left to right. Zero slope means the line is perfectly horizontal (y = constant). If the line is vertical (x = constant), the slope is undefined because you would be dividing by zero.
